Super Visa

What is a Super Visa?

  • The Canadian government introduced Super Visas in 2011 to manage the backlog of applications received from visitors who wanted longer stays in Canada.
  • Valid for up to 10 years, the Super Visa is granted to qualified parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Unlike the regular visitor's visa that allows someone to remain in Canada for only six months, the Super Visa allows a stay of up to five years with an option to apply for an extension.

For more specifics, and to start the application process, visit the Immigration and Citizenship section at the Government of Canada website. Or visit an Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada office near you.

These are just the super visa insurance requirements; not the requirements for the actual super visa itself. The full requirements to be approved for a super visa are listed here.

Travel insurance: You must also obtain travel insurance for your parent or grandparent, lasting at least one year and with a minimum of $100,000 coverage. The policy must be bought from a Canadian insurance company, and you need to submit proof of purchase.

And when it’s time to evaluate travel insurance to satisfy super visa requirements, don’t forget trip interruption insurance, and examine the various deductibles that can lower your costs.
